Day 2278 since the crash.

Jonathan was on a ventilator during the first month in ICU, and kept the trachea tube shown below for another 5 months. It was removed in December 2002.

This page shows diagrams of the airflow through his trachea tube and how his speaking valve works.

Normal airflow,
from the nose into the lungs.

Airflow through a tracheostomy tube.

Tracheostomy with a 'cuff', preventing
airflow to or from the nose or mouth.

The one-way Passy-Muir Valve (PMV)
allows inhalation through the tracheostomy tube,
but the exhaled air must pass the vocal cords
and the mouth or nose.
